Kathleen Dworak: My Reflections - Watercolor Technique and Process

Kathleen Dworak, celebrated watercolorist and the juror for our 2023 Members Exhibition, will demonstrate how she creates realistic reflections on chrome in this online demo.

Spring Ahead by Kathleen Dvorak

Dvorak will share a brief slideshow and talk about her experiences as a watercolorist and demonstrate her approach to painting. Her work with chrome and reflections has been mostly done with motorcycles. That can be a little hard to replicate in a demo, as the bike paintings take months to complete. Instead, she will demonstrate a painting of everyday chrome fixtures most of us have in our homes. It can be your roadmap for painting chrome and other reflective surfaces.

During this demo she will:

• Go over the best ways to photograph your subject matter yielding the best reflective effects.
• Show how a detailed drawing is the next step and sets the stage to achieve the detailed reflections.
• Show and discuss her choice of materials; paper, paint, brushes, and other items used while creating her paintings.

Since the paintings take a long time to complete, she won’t complete the actual painting in the allotted time. Yet, the “road map” will be there to see how it will look when completed.

Challenges always occur when painting and I have certainly made errors along the way. She'll be more than happy to discuss them, and to show how she most definitely learned from them. And there are always the “happy accidents” that watercolor is known for!
