Join us for for a morning of painting at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA. We'll meet at the pig sculpture along the river. There are a variety of subjects to paint, including the museum itself, the river, a variety of statues and the extensive gardens. Restrooms are located inside the museum. The museum cafe serves delicious lunch choices and it would be nice to meet around 1:00 for lunch in the cafe for shop talk.

    See Google Maps for directions.

Pell Street Signs, Chinatown by Tim Saternow

Tim’s demo will be a preview of his two-day PWCS workshop in October and be more of an open dialog between Tim and anyone with questions or observations about his work. He will talk about how he paints large architectural landscape watercolors with a thick use of watercolor paint, playing with the tension between the illusions of depth, carefully drawn linear perspective, and an obvious play on the surface of the paper through watermarks, paint runs, blooms and spatters. Saternow is particularly sensitive to the emotive power of light, especially the distinct light of fall and winter creating deep shadows while playing across the faces of the old brick townhouses in New York and the weathered clapboard of Cape Cod.

Join Tim Saternow for this two-day workshop on creating strong watercolor paintings using bold value arrangements, powerful lights and darks, correct linear perspective, and attention to effective compositions in urban landscape paintings.

BAR, Baxter Street, NYC by Tim Saternow

This workshop will concentrate on the process of developing a watercolor painting beginning with small value sketches in pencil, the use of ‘grisaille’ (monochromatic under-painting) to build value contrast, layering of local color, and ‘deconstructing’ a painting with the use of thrown water, splatters, runs and blooms. My technique will have you turn around your ideas of approaching a painting. We will look at ‘light shapes’ and ‘shadow shapes’ and not simply objects. You will start with the darkest darks (while saving the white paper), and then begin to build a painting by observing the power of light and shadow – it’s all about value patterns.

With demonstrations, close individual instruction, and encouraging critiques, Splash Dynamic will give students the skills to successfully turn a research photo into an exciting painting (not just a duplication of the photo) that becomes a very personal vision of the artist.
