PHILADELPHIA WATER COLOR SOCIETY
As an artist I thrive on working en plein air. Through a group of plein air artists I enjoy the privilege of being allowed to paint on many of the farms under conservancy in Chester County. Stepping onto these properties the challenge becomes not only selecting subject matter and representing it in a painterly way but also capturing the essence of that particular place at that moment in time. Whether I’m painting with a group or by myself I try to be mindful of those challenges.
Al Richards is a native of Chester County residing in Chester Springs. After receiving a degree in Studio Art from Colorado College he moved back to the area in 1975. While working and raising a family he continued his artistic endeavors through classes and workshops at arts associations in the Mid-Atlantic area. Since retiring in 2014 he has been able to paint daily either in the studio or en plein air. He spends most of his time painting with Land Art Event’s “Farm to Table” group but also participates in plein air events including Chadds Ford Paint Out, West Reading Plein Air, Paint Ocean City (MD) and Plein Air Brandywine Valley.
When not painting he keeps active as the International Anniversary Show chair for Philadelphia Water Color Society and the exhibition chair for the newly formed Philadelphia Pastel Society.
